Hello! one and all! Welcome to Americas original combat sport's homepage! The best place to find out about this fictional game in a short summery:
Created in 1940 as a better way to train US troops in the Army, Marines and Navy preparing to be stationed in the European front if WWII ever came knocking on America's door...which it did! By 1945 the game's rules were a team must consist of 10 players on each side who would then shoot at each other with Pellet guns or rubber bullets and after 6 shots, you were out. The game was fun and very educational for younger recruits. After the last of the troops were brought back around 1945 to 1946, they yearned to play again, only to learn that by 1948 the training exercise was being removed from boot camps and bases all around the United States! Eventually a group of 5 soldiers, the leader of them being Dick Pondreas(the father of dreadzone) suggested that the exercise be turned into a public sport. The new game was tested in 1949 and was approved to have its first season on March 1st 1950. Public knowledge about the game was very limited. the original 10 teams were:
New York Yanks
Los Angeles Maritime
Chicago Great Lakers
Detroit Autos
Philadelphia Liberty
Baltimore Troops
Cleveland Steamers
St. Louis Jets
Washington Prezes
Boston Americans
By the end of the 1960s dreadzone became a popular American sport. The first broadcasted game was on May 16th 1963 the Houston Vanguard were playing the St. Louis Jets in a heated match for a spot in the finals.Dispite a lawsuit and a warning from president Lyndon B Johnson, the game remained strong until 1968 when the "Make love not war" attitude halted all games and seasons until the return of dreadzone in 1972. no games were televised again until 1977 with the disgust of the Vietnam war fresh in our minds. Very few people watched the games from 1972 to 1983 because the thought of seeing more violence on television made some people sick to there stomachs.
In the second half of the 1980s, dreadzone got a new look. the names of teams became less family friendly, but the nastier the teams got the more people showed up! this us especially true in the south, which was just being exposed to dreadzone with more southern teams then ever before. to name a few;
Houston Astronaughts
Dallas Assassins
San Antonio Toro Locos
Memphis Bears
Nashville Musicians
Kansas City Killers
Those were only a few of the teams from the south. By this point the National Dreadzone Association(NDA) made a decision to cut the league into 4 divisions; North east, South east, North west, and South west. This made the dreadzone blackout zones much easier to create for public viewing and easier schedules to fallow. The 1990s showed the largest amount of dreadzone teams ever! Teams were coming and going and there was very little order to the league. order did not really return until 1999 and then kept a pretty steady grip. The gulf war caused a wave of fresh new players from the marines army navy and now even the air force! Another difference is that a knew element was added to the battle fields...tank and jeep warfare. teams could now perches 1 tank and 2 Humvees to roll around in, in special kinds of matches.
That is the history of Dreadzone Americas Combat sport!
